Soylent Green
The 1976 movie, "Soylent Green" was ahead of its time in portraying the dangers of non-sustainable growth and the consequence of an absence of environmental stewardship. It is in all probability the first movie (not documentary) that showed the possible effects from climate change to mankind. One of the interesting aspects of the movie is that despite the futuristic setting, it wasn't portrayed in a futuristic manner (as opposed to other movies with starships, lasers and teleporting devices). In fact, all of the technology presented in the film was available at the time the movie was produced.
This movie was made to be gritty and not necessarily "fantastic". In many ways it intended to be a warning of the path that were on, and continue to be on. This movie has become somewhat of a cult classic, but was still fairly popular when it first came out.
To conclude our study of this film, consider the following questions:
Are we on the same path (as a global society, and or as a nation) that precursed the plot (as was presented in the movie by Sal when he recounts why the world was in such dire straits)? Can we control our outcome? Do we want to control our outcome as a human race? What must we do if we are to help control our outcome on this planet?
You must post you responses to the questions no later than this Sunday 11:59 p.m.

Alternative Energy...
DON'T FORGET TO TURN IN THE EQUIPMENT!!!!
What do you feel is the best way to jumpstart the move toward green energy; therefore moving away from fossil fuels?
We know doing this sooner rather than later will be beneficial. How do we push this along and not wait until we must do to a lack of fossil fuels?
Responses are due no later than Monday at 11:59 p.m.

Pertaining to questions assigned in class...
Each of you has been assigned a specific question from the chapter to correlate with the question below. Make sure that you place the number of your assigned question at the top of your response so I know what angle you are coming from.
How do the concepts presented in your assigned question relate to our national viewpoint on ecosystem capital usage? What does this show us about where we are at as a society? Are we making positive preogress?
Responses are due no later than 11:59 p.m. this Sunday.

In Class Research; Then Respond...
Imagine you have been sent as a Peace Corps volunteer to a poor African nation experienceing widespread hunger. Design a strategy for assesing the needs of the people and for contacting appropriate sources for help.
What sources and organizations would you contact? How would you go about evaluating what was needed, and what was feasable in terms of aid? What would be the priorities?
I need to see specifics (organizations, etc.). You need to do your research, see what has been/is being done in similiar situations, and how can you apply that information?
Responses are due no later than Thursday Feb. 5th @ 11:59 p.m.

Farming
O.k., here’s the new one and it is actually posted!
There have been success stories and land degradation stories solicited by the UNEP and presented on the website http://www.oasisglobal.net/successes.htm
Look at some of the stories, comment on what you see is common between them, and how this relates to the video we watched in class “The Oregon Farming Story”.
Responses are due no later than Saturday night (1/24/09) by midnight (12:00)
